Program Notes

Although not now accurate, the composer wrote the following in the mid '70's: Antique Forms of Lost Friends is freely atonal in style. Consistency of chord progression and the continuous change and development of closely related motives give this composition unity. Material that is foreign in nature, occurs at the beginning of the third movement, but makes a slow stylistic transition back into a section where variations of previous ideas are stated in a recapitulation. The three part structure of the second movement is of particular interest. It begins with a "recitative" for solo flute with viola accompaniment. This leads into a passage that is dominated by long trilled notes. A cadenza for unaccompanied viola follows. The composition was written upon request of S.K. and S.C. in the fall of 1972.
